It can be tough for military spouses to work while raising a family. As a result, a number of military spouses are unemployed or underemployed, according to a new report commissioned by the nonprofit Blue Star Families.
It comes at a cost, for both the individual families and the economy. Unemployment was estimated to cost the U.S. $1 billion a year in lost income taxes, unemployment benefits, and healthcare issues related to unemployment and underemployment.
Underemployed military spouses also found themselves at a loss, working in jobs that don’t reflect their education or experience, or earning less than 20 percent of the average of their peers with the same major or occupation, according to Military Times.
The Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) Scholarship may help to change that. It’s a workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 of tuition assistance to eligible military spouses. The MyCAA Scholarship can help military spouses obtain the licenses, certificates, certifications, or associate degrees necessary to land high-demand jobs, with opportunities for advancement.
The even better news? Spouses can use their MyCAA funds at any academic institution approved for participation in the MyCAA Scholarship, such as Everglades University.
